Campout and Post Wednesday Wrap-Up (4 November 2009)
Hello All!
I just wanted to give you a run down of the happenings from last week's scout activity. We planned for our camp out and help further establish our troop by solidifying some aspects of our two patrols. The two patrols, the Pumas and the Beasts, now have a flag that has been designed and a patrol yell. Ask your boys about them and see if they can tell you about both of them. (They should be able to! ;] )
Beasts:
Chase (Patrol Leader)
Nathaniel (Chaplain Aide)
Matthew (Webmaster)
Joe
Kenny
Pumas:
Zach (Patrol Leader)
Jonas (Senior Patrol Leader over both patrols but in this patrol)
Wyatt (Quartermaster for both patrols)
Brandon
Joshua
And as many of you know (especially if you read the previous paragraph) there is a camp out coming up this weekend. (Tomorrow!) We are very excited to be heading back to Kikapoo. We will be meeting at the Church at 5:15 PM on Friday and then we will be leaving at 5:30 PM. We should be back at the church at Noon on Saturday. Food is all taken care of, the boys will just need to remember to bring flashlights, sleeping bags and WARM CLOTHING. (It might be a cold one!) They also should be wearing their scout shirts as we travel to campsite. (They can take them off once they get there so as to not ruin them.) Also the boys have instituted a new rule involving camp outs and cell phones and electronic devices. Electronic devices will not be permitted on campouts. (Unless there is an needed exception, if this is the case please let me know.) Cell phones will be allowed to be brought but collected and kept together in a safe, secure location for the duration of the camp out. There will, however, be allotted cell phone time at night, that will give the boys an opportunity to call home and say good night. If there is an emergency then we will still have access to our phones. This was a compromise that the boys came up with, so please help us keep this rule. Thanks and see you tomorrow!
***Added Later****
Just so you are aware, the boys also planned our fireside activity here are the assignments:
Opening Prayer: Joe
Scout Spiritual Thought: Zach
Leader Spiritual Thought: Jonathan Young
Closing Prayer: Wyatt
If there are any questions or concerns please give one of us a call.

Wednesday Scout Meeting 28 October 2009
Hello again I just wanted to make you all aware of our troop meeting on Wednesday night. We will be working on the Communications Merit Badge and James Keller has a VERY special after merit badge activity planned for us.
Here is what each boys needs to do/bring:L
-Scoutshirts! (At the parents' discretion we can leave the scout shirts locked in our scout closet so that they don't need to remember every week. If you'd rather not do that, that is completely fine and your decision.)
-Warmish clothing. (James' activity is outside but being cold shouldn't be a problem.)
-If all of you could check out the previous blog post of the communications merit badge and be prepared to complete the following requirements:
--2 a or b (To be completed on Wednesday with the counselor)
--6 (To be completed later, but will need to be approved on wednesday.)
--7 a (If this could be completed prior to the meeting that would be great if not then it can be completed afterward.)
--9 (As much information as you can get before hand is great.
We look forward to seeing all of you on Wednesday!

Communications Merit Badge Requirement
Hello Everyone!
Due to the fact that we are working on the Communications Merit badge I thought I would post the requirements of said merit badge. (Courtesy of meritbadge.org)
For everyone's information the most of the boys have done the first requirement. And some have done others.
Thanks
Communications Requirements
1. Do ONE of the following:
a. For one day, keep a log in which you describe your communication activities. Keep track of the time and different ways you spend communicating, such as talking person-to-person, listening to your teachers or the radio, watching television, reading books, and other print media, and communicating online. Discuss with your counselor what your log reveals about the importance of communication in your life. Think of ways to improve your communications skills.
b. For three days, keep a journal of your listening experiences. Identify one example of each of the following, and discuss with your counselor when you have listened to:
1. Obtain information
2. A persuasive argument
3. Appreciate or enjoy something
4. Understand someone's feelings
c. In a small-group setting, meet with other scouts or with friends. Have them share personal stories about significant events in their lives that affected them in some way. Take note of how each scout participates in the group discussion and how effective each one is in telling his story. Report what you have learned to your counselor about the differences you observed in effective communication.
d. List as many ways as you can think of to communicate with others (face-to-face, by telephone, letter, e-mail, fax). For each type of communication discuss with your counselor an instance when that method might not be appropriate or effective.
2. Do ONE of the following:
a. Think of a creative way to describe yourself, using, for example, a collage, short story or autobiography, drawing or series of photographs, or a song or skit. Using the aid you created, make a presentation to your counselor about yourself.
b. Choose a concept, product, or service in which you have great confidence. Build a sales plan based on its good points. Try to persuade the counselor to agree with, use, or buy your concept, product or service. After your sales talk, discuss with your counselor how persuasive you were.
3. Write a five-minute speech. Give it at a meeting of a group.
4. Interview someone you know fairly well, like, or respect because of his or her position, talent, career or life experiences. Listen actively to learn as much as you can about the person. Then prepare and deliver to your counselor an introduction of the person as though this person were to be a guest speaker, and include reasons why the audience would want to hear this person speak. Show how you would call to invite this person to speak.
5. Attend a public meeting (city council, school board, debate) approved by your counselor where several points of view are given on a single issue. Practice active listening skills and take careful notes of each point of view. Present an objective report that includes all points of view that were expressed, and share this with your counselor.
6. With your counselor's approval, develop a plan to teach a skill or inform someone about something. Prepare teaching aids for your plan. Carry out your plan. With your counselor, determine whether the person has learned what you intended.
7. Do ONE of the following:
a. Write to the editor of a magazine or your local newspaper to express your opinion or share information on any subject you choose. Send your message by fax, email or regular mail.
b. Create a Web page for your scout troop, school, or other organization. Include at least one article and one photograph or illustration, and one link to some other web page that would be helpful to someone who visits the web page you have created. It is not necessary to post your web page to the internet, but if you decide to do so, you must first share it with your parents and counselor and get their permission.
c. Use desktop publishing to produce a newsletter, brochure, flier or other printed material for your scout troop, class at school, or other group. Include at least one article and one photograph or illustration.
8. Plan a troop court of honor or campfire program. Have the patrol leaders' council approve it, then write the script and prepare the program. Serve as master of ceremonies.
9. Learn about opportunities in the field of communication. Choose one career in which you are interested and discuss with your counselor the major responsibilities of that position and the qualifications, education, and preparation it requires.

Weekly Scout Meeting Wrap Up (21 Oct 2009)
Hello everyone!
I thought so you could stay up to date with what we are doing in scouts I would send a brief blogpost pertaining to the happenings of the Troop Meeting.
I am emailing this one but check it out on our troop blog
Tim Ellsworth has offered a surprise to anyone who comments on this blogpost!
I would encourage you to become a follower of this blog so that you can get emails of the posts that make it up here. (It will make it a lot more convenient for you to keep track of what your boys are doing!)
Also I wanted to make you all aware that I have changed my email address for scout purposes only so that, when I am released from this calling we can maintain this infrastructure that we are working so hard to set up. It is troop222scoutmaster@gmail.com
Feel free to email me at my other email address (it all pops to the same place anyway), I just wanted to make you aware of the change.
Tonight the boys planned for the coming months and came with a few items to keep us busy for the coming months.
In the coming months we will be working on the following merit badges:
-Communications
This should be finished in about 2 weeks.
-Aviation
This will involve (most likely) a trip to the Rantoul Aerospace Museum
-Climbing
This one is mostly finished
-Citizenship in the Community
We have some other fun activities planned and have already looked at a camp out date (tentatively for the 13-14th of November). We are really excited for the progress we are making and don't forget about the Merit Badge Clinic this Saturday!
